The Benefits of Small-Scale Nursing Homes vs. Large Senior Care Chains

For families who are in the process of determining which senior care facility best suits their loved ones’ needs, there are a number of deciding factors.

Some factors may include the size of a nursing home care facility, the number of staff members, or medical care capabilities.

In terms of nursing home care, there are typically dozens of options to choose from in any given area, and Sympaticare works closely with New York State elder-care facilities both large and small to provide the tools and resources that allow these locations to thrive.

The Benefits of Small-Scale Nursing Homes vs. Large Senior Care Chains
In this blog post, our nursing home administration company will outline the benefits of going with ‘Mom and Pop’ nursing homes over large chains.

Increased Comfort and Privacy

Smaller, close-knit facilities often provide residents with more of an ‘at-home’ environment and an opportunity for personalized senior care

Small senior care facilities are designed especially with patient comfort in mind. Private bathrooms and living spaces are typically included for each resident, which is convenient for more of an ‘at-home' feel as well as to spend private time with visitors.

Residents are also given more leeway in these facilities and have the opportunity to set their own schedules for wake-up calls, meals, and bedtime.

Closer Relationships with Staff

There is far more staff per resident in smaller nursing homes, thus allowing these staff members to build a closer and more attentive relationship with residents.

This means that staff are also more likely to spend increased amounts of time with individual residents, and can learn more about each of them as well as any specific wants or needs.

Because of this, staff members are also more likely to catch potential issues early on, and assist patients with future treatment plans as soon as possible.

High Capability of Treating Those with Special Needs

Most residents in a senior care facility have a special need of some kind - whether it be a disease, disability, diet, or other need that requires attention.

Some residents may also be in the recovery process following a major surgery or operation, and depend on staff for increased assistance.

In smaller nursing homes, staff members have a much broader capability to be able to meet whatever needs an individual patient may have. The small resident-to-staff ratio permits an increase in one on one time spent with each resident.
