Whether it be a physical/mental health condition or recovery from surgery, there are many reasons the elderly population may end up being placed in a senior care facility, such as a nursing home.
In some cases, nursing home residents may have elective surgeries which require care in a skilled nursing facility afterward. Unlike most residents, they often become independent quickly and their conditions are forecasted to improve as they move toward discharge.

In this blog post, Sympaticare will explain why post-pandemic nursing homes may require increased staffing. |
With an overall increased need for short-term caregivers and administration requirements, senior care management companies will need to prepare to meet higher levels of staffing requirements including healthcare workers, housekeepers, and administrators.
Increase in Short-Term Care Needs
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the general demographics within senior care facilities reflected a much different scenario within a nursing home population than post-pandemic data. For instance, before the pandemic, many people were able to stay in a senior care facility for short-term rehabilitation due to elective surgeries or an injury.
However, during the pandemic, most senior care facilities halted short-term care services for a long period of time, as hospitals were doing everything to stop the spread of the virus and utilize all resources towards fighting a relentlessly deadly virus.
The initial conclusion would be that without elective surgeries, the number of residents in long-term care facilities would decrease, requiring less staff. However, in place of those are residents who have health needs that are significantly greater in nature. Those with declining awareness and independence have tended to fill the open beds, thus requiring more staff to monitor and assist these residents.
Increased Administration Requirements
Another need for increased staffing comes in the form of administrative or transitional paperwork associated with residents who are frequently sent between the hospital and nursing home. The multi-disciplinary teams that participate in a resident's care plan become inundated quickly as residents come and go to the facility.
With all these new demands, it is still possible for a nursing home to run efficiently and effectively. Senior care facilities should evaluate and maintain their residents' safety as their top priority, while also addressing any signs of employee burnout. With post-pandemic circumstances, this may in fact mean increasing their staff.
