Understanding the Differences Between Types of Senior Care | Sympaticare: A Senior Care Management Company
In this blog post, Sympaticare, a nursing home administration company, explains the major differences between the different types of senior care, including nursing homes, assisted living, and specialized senior care.

Sympaticare, a senior care management company, specializes in providing assisted living and nursing home facilities, as well as those involved with specialized senior care, with the resources they need to establish and/or operate successful, state-of-the-art, and high-quality facilities.

In this blog post, our nursing home administration company will explain the key differences between the different types of senior care, including nursing homes, assisted living, and specialized senior care.

Nursing Homes and Skilled Nursing Facilities

Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, are designed especially for seniors who require round-the-clock care and monitoring in case of a severe condition.

These facilities are often occupied by those who may be bedridden or in a wheelchair, thus needing assistance to be mobile.

In nursing homes, the highest level of long-term, day-to-day medical care is offered for elderly adults suffering or recovering from a serious health issue.

To enter a nursing home, in most cases, you will need state approval as well as a physical exam and prescription.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is more of a moderate option for seniors who may not want to, or who are no longer capable of living alone, but do not require 24/7 care and wish to maintain an active, social lifestyle.

Like nursing homes, assisted living facilities also provide long-term medical care for seniors, but those in assisted living are typically more active. However, some residents of assisted living facilities may require custodial care. Custodial care is to help with everyday activities of living such as bathing, dressing, or using the restroom.

Those in assisted living remain active while receiving care, visiting a dining room for dinner with other residents, and participating in a number of social activities, both indoors and outdoors, that are of interest to them.

Specialized Senior Care

Specialized senior care is any specific type of treatment that seniors in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or even at home, may receive from a caregiver. Caregivers for seniors in special units also aid their patients with everyday tasks comparable to the aforementioned custodial services.

However, for those receiving specialized care, care is often geared towards the special needs those with particular health conditions may need on a day-to-day basis. An example of this might be an alarm system installed in a memory care unit to prevent dementia patients from wandering.

Typically those receiving specialized services are either suffering or recovering from a serious condition or medical episodes such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, a heart attack, or stroke.
