What is Skilled Nursing?

The term “skilled nursing” is referred to as a high level of medical care that is necessary to be provided by a licensed RN, physical, speech, or occupational therapist in order to meet patient needs for care or treatment over the long or short term.

While this type of care is performed widely in hospitals and doctor’s offices, skilled nursing is also offered in a number of designated facilities, including the majority of nursing homes and assisted living communities around the World.

Skilled Nursing Facilities and Nursing Homes - What is the difference?

While both nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities can provide long-term, permanent care to residents in need of round the clock supervision and treatment, the care provided at nursing homes involves custodial daily activities such as aiding a patient with movement, eating habits, using the restroom, or distribution of medications.

Skilled nursing facilities provide direct care by either registered nurses or medical doctors and licensed therapists including general rehab, to therapy, custodial care, wound care, injections, and constant monitoring.

Who typically needs Skilled Nursing Care?

In most cases, Skilled Nursing Care is relied heavily on by seniors who require daily treatment, however, anyone may turn to skilled nursing facilities to aid in around-the-clock high-level care due to a severe medical condition or rehabilitation from a major injury.

What are some examples of Skilled Nursing Care?

There are a number of examples of skilled nursing care, both long and short-term.

Such care may be necessary on a continuous basis, or as needs arise.

A few examples include:

  • General rehab

  • Physical therapy

  • Intravenous therapy

  • Speech therapy

  • Custodial care

  • Catheter care

  • Wound care

  • Injections

  • Checking vitals

  • Constant monitoring

What happens in a Skilled Nursing Care Facility?

When a new patient is moved into a Skilled Nursing facility, registered nurses or licensed practical nurses create care plans based on patient needs.

Any of the medications, supplies, equipment, or types of therapy vital to the health of the patient are included in this plan and then carried out.

Typically, a patient is seen by nurses whenever necessary to his or her health, although this treatment and personal care would be available around the clock.

What are the advantages of using a Skilled Nursing Facility?

There are a number of advantages immediately available to a patient when he or she is admitted to a Skilled Nursing Facility.

They include:

  • Immediate, round the clock access to healthcare services

  • Treatment is only performed by a registered nurse(s)

  • Access to licensed physical or speech therapists

  • Constant aid in daily tasks

  • Housekeeping

  • Frequent interaction with others
