What are Adult Day Services? | Sympaticare: A Senior Service Administration Company
What are adult day services? Sympaticare, a senior care administration company, explains what adult day services entail for seniors.

At Sympaticare, a senior care service management company, we strive to provide an array of services that meet the growing demands of seniors throughout their various levels of care.

Of those many senior care services available, Senior Adult Day Services offer rich environments with supervision, recreation, meals, and medical care for seniors to spend their days with the accompaniment of other seniors and skilled nursing staff.

At Sympaticare, we assist our partners in providing a professional care setting in which older adults, adults living with dementia, or adults living with disabilities receive professional care in the form of individualized therapeutic, social, and health services for a portion of the day.

Adult Day Services were designed to provide social and some health services to adults who need supervised care in a safe place outside the home during the day. These services also give caregivers a timeout from daily caregiving demands.

Hours of operation for Senior adult day services are typically five days per week and are offered during normal operating hours, although some services are offered on the weekends.

Why are Adult Day Services important?

Adult Day Services are important when it comes to managing chronic diseases, offering community-based senior care options, offering support to caregivers, supplements the growing demand for long-term senior care services, and offers comprehensive skilled health care to the seniors who attend.

Managing Chronic Diseases

Disease-specific programs being offered through Senior Adult Day Services to address chronic conditions are at an all-time high. Adult Day Service participants have higher levels of chronic conditions and disease, such as hypertension (46%), physical disability (42%), cardiovascular disease (34%), diabetes (31%), mental illness (25%), and developmental disability (20%). These numbers are at an all-time high.

The focus of care in Adult Day Services is on prevention and health maintenance — the majority (nearly 80%) of centers offer physical activity programs to address cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Community-Based Care: Leaders for Seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease

Adult day services provide a safe, engaging, interactive, and secure environment. Of all participants, almost 50% have some level of dementia. Roughly 90% of adult day services centers offer cognitive stimulation programs, almost 80% provide memory training programs, and more than 75% offer educational programs. The care being provided to attendees may delay nursing home placement, allowing seniors to "age in place,"

They Provide Optimal Support for Caregivers

Adult day services enhance the overall quality of life for caregivers and restore balance to daily life in times of crisis, as they provide a break for family caregivers from daily responsibilities. More than 80% of participants attend full days, while roughly 46% attend five days per week, allowing family caregivers to maintain their occupations in the workforce and care for their families.

A Growing Source of Long-Term Care

Across the United States, more than 4,600 adult day service centers are in operation. Since 2002, this is a 35% increase. Currently, services assist over 260,000 participants and family caregivers. Since 2002, this is an increase of over 100,000 people.

Comprehensive Skilled Health Care

An interdisciplinary team of highly skilled professionals meets the physical, emotional, and social needs of both participants and family caregivers. Teams are comprised of nursing professionals, social work professionals and most additionally offer case management services.

Care is more individualized, enabling staff to care for increasingly complex needs as they arise. Roughly half of Senior Adult Day Centers across the U.S. provide physical, occupational, or speech therapy to Seniors attending.

To date, adult day services centers are emerging transitional care and short-term rehabilitation providers following hospital discharge.
