We care for those who care for others. Sympaticare, a senior care management company, shares five current nursing home statistics for 2021. |
It can be difficult to keep up with the constantly evolving statistics when it comes to the field of skilled nursing. Whether you’ve been a nursing home owner for years or you’re just getting started, it’s incredibly important to stay in the know.
In this blog post, Sympaticare, a nursing home management company, will share five statistics about the future of nursing homes.
The number of senior citizens is expected to nearly double by 2060
By 2060, it is estimated that there will be 94.7 million senior citizens in the United States, which is a 45% increase from 2018, where there were an estimated 52.4 million seniors.
However, the number of senior citizens over the age of 85 is expected to grow even more
The 85 and older population is projected to triple between 2015 and 2050. This age group also has the highest need for long-term care or skilled nursing.
The chance of being admitted to a nursing home increases with age
Nearly one in six (15%) adults 85 years and older live in nursing homes, compared to just 1.1% of adults who are 65 to 74 years of age. Nearly half of adults who live in nursing homes fall within the 85 years or older age group.
The majority of nursing home residents are single women
Nearly three in four (72%) residents of nursing homes are women, many of whom do not have a spouse (70%).
Quality of care is less dependent on hours of care received per day
On average, residents of nursing facilities receive about 4 hours of nursing care per day. However, the quality of care a resident receives is less dependent on the number of hours of care received and more dependent on nursing home staffing levels. Higher staffing levels were associated with better quality outcomes.
